Long-Term Larynx-Excitation Spectra

P. B. Carr, D. Trill · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1964

One important aspect of speech research is the study of larynx excitation. which has considerable influence on the fine structure of speech waves. Data are presented in graphical form of the long-term larynx-excitation spectra derived from six frequently occurring English vowel sounds, each uttered by ten male speakers. Inverse filtering was used to isolate the larynx source. The spectral analysis was performed with a 10-cps band-width filter and averaged over a 23-sec passage. The slopes of the larynx spectra were found to vary from −8 dB to −16 dB per octave, and in one-third of the spectra regularly spaced zeros occurred. The spectra are discussed in connection with analysis-synthesis telephony.
