A new formalization for script-based story understanding

A new approach to dealing with inheritance nonmonotonicity, exceptional inheritance logic (EIL), was proposed in (Al-Asady & Narayanan 1992,1993). While the approach is successful for some toy examples often mentioned in the literature, its capability for more complicated nonmonotonic situations remains unknown. This paper is aiming at applying this new approach into script-based story understanding to give a causal explanation about why the story happens in a particular way which may or may not follow the scripts. We claim that this approach distinguishes implicit causality and explicit causality between the sequence of actions.
