Statistical deconvolution for AVO

John F. Parrish, MC Bell · 2006

When noise power varies from trace to trace, classic statistical spiking deconvolution can make AVO interpretation problematic. Normalizing the spiking filter to match Burg's power spectral estimate eliminates the filter's sensitivity to noise power on the traces but it also balances the output amplitudes thereby eliminating some of the actual AVO effects within the derive gates. Relative entropy normalization of the spiking deconvolution filter is recommended because it is relatively insensitive to both the noise power on the input traces and the signal power within the derive gate. Relative entropy normalization scales the classic spiking deconvolution filter by the square root of the reciprocal of the relative prediction error, RPE a unit less fraction smaller than 1.0.
