Surface reconstruction with preserving volume data

The marching cubes (MC) algorithm is widely used as a means to convert volume data into surface data. However, it will be shown that the conversion does not preserve volume. With our previous work [13] we described an algorithm to preserve the volume in such a conversion. But it is applicable only to objects of uniform material such as plastic toys. The new algorithm presented in this paper will be applicable to general data such as medical CT (Computer Tomography). In addition, an algorithm for 2D cases is described. It will be shown that the resulting surface with this algorithm is much more similar to the original surface than that with MC. © 2000 Scripta Technica, Syst Comp Jpn, 31(12): 43–51, 2000
