Edge preserving image smoothing using nonlinear diffusion and a semi-local edge detection technique in digital mammography images

Mark M. Roden, Lawrence W. Bassett, Daniel J. Valentino · Proceedings of SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering/Proceedings of SPIE · 2009

Digital mammography images often contain noise proportional to the dose given to the patient. The signal to noise ratio is typically improved by increasing the dose as noise reduction methods tend to blur clinically important edges and details, such as fibers or calcifications. A new algorithm is presented to reduce noise while preserving features relevant in digital mammography and allowing for an overall reduction of patient dose.
