The Use of Local Information Gain for Automatic Detection of Changes in a Scene

Joselíto J. Chua, Peter Eric Tischer · 2004

We propose a technique for automatic detection of significant changes between two video frames of the same scene. The technique uses the local information gain between corresponding blocks in the images. The technique has two advantages over conventional methods based on luminance di#erences: (1) the proposed technique does not require an arbitrarily-determined threshold for deciding how much change in pixel values amounts to a significant change in the scene; and (2) the technique can detect di#erences in the scene even when the frames were acquired under di#erent lighting conditions.
