A brief review is given of the development of computing aids since Babylonian times with emphasis on the last 400 years leading up to the advent of electronic computers and calculators.Electronic desk calculators, both programmable and non-programmable, are proving extremely useful in all forms of computation, and details are given of the Hewlett–Packard machines of the former category, including their internal operation and particular suitability to survey problems.
