Regularities of Cross Correlations in Spectra of Speech
K. P. Li, George W. Hughes · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1969
Long-time averages of cross-correlation coefficients of connected speech data derived from filter bank outputs show consistent patterns for a number of talkers. A set of equal-magnitude contours of these coefficients provides a quantitative description and demonstrates the effect of talkers and speech materials. The effect on the contours of including the silent portions of connected speech is evaluated to provide a means of interpreting data previously reported by Kulya. [Experimental investigation of the correlation relations in the speech spectrum and a comparison of some variants of orthogonal vocoder, Telecommunications 18, No. 4, 39–50 (1964).] The cross correlations of individual time samples were examined in an attempt to relate the patterns to the acoustical characteristics of speech signals and to various linguistic concepts. Samples taken from the speech of four male and two female talkers speaking a variety of materials were included in the study.
