The next twenty years in information retrieval

Although information retrieval has lately become quite a fad, I intend in this paper to stand back and take an unhurried look at what is going on, and try to predict where this field must go and what it must do in the future. "Information retrieval" is a name that I had the pleasure of coining only eight years ago, at another computer conference. The name has come a long way since then.
