Summary Most of the data archive and exchange formats developed in the early days of oil-patch computing are running out of steam. Higher data volumes, greater data complexity, and demands for multidis-cipline and real-time data exchange have positioned data exchange as a key ingredient of today's computing architectures. This article reviews the history of geoscience data exchange and examines some current requirements and standards efforts.
