Methods of object-oriented programming are compared with the software needs of the field of computational mechanics. It appears that object-oriented programming techniques can enable computational mechanics software structures with desirable characteristics not easily obtained within a conventional software perspective: (1) they can function more easily with different coordinate types; (2) they facilitate the construction of larger system models from proven (relocatable) subsystem models; and (3) they easily support multiresolution computational processes. >
