Kinetic art and mechanical chaos

The authors have studied experimentally some transitions to chaos obtained in artistic mobiles made by F. de Cuzey. In the particular case of a complex structure made of a series of coupled arms set into motion by a motor rotating at constant speed, the authors show a correspondence with the problem of a nonlinear simple pendulum.
