The laboratory component of a computer organization course

Patricia A. Wenner · ACM SIGCSE Bulletin · 1990

A computer organization course provides the foundation for many other courses in computer science. It is important that the course emphasize principles rather than current designs so that students can understand newly developed computers from the research lab and manufacturers. To encourage students to develop insights which will serve them in the future, the computer organization course at Bucknell is offered with a weekly laboratory component which emphasizes experimentation and application of principles. This paper describes the course, the environment, the laboratory assignments, and the value of such a component.
