Mobility Models in Mobile Ad Hoc Network

S. Radha, Subbaiah Shanmugavel · IETE Journal of Research · 2007

In order to evaluate the performance of a protocol for an ad hoc network, the protocol should be tested under realistic conditions such as transmission range, buffer space, data traffic models, and realistic movements of the mobile users. This paper discusses the survey of mobility models that are used in the simulations of ad hoc networks. We describe several mobility models that represent mobile nodes whose movements are independent of each other and group mobility models that represent mobile nodes whose movements are dependent on each other. The main goal of this paper is to present a number of mobility models used to model the ad hoc network and the performance of the routing protocol is dependent on the more realistic models. Also this paper helps the researchers about the choices of mobility model can be used for their performance evaluations. Lastly, we present the simulation results for the routing protocol that illustrate the importance of choosing a mobility model in the simulation of an ad hoc network protocol.
