Antialiasing of Bump-Maps

Andreas Schilling · 1997

Bump-maps, like texture maps or any other maps consisting of discretely stored data have to be properly filtered, if they are being resampled in the process of rendering an image. If, however, bump maps are filtered in the traditional way, the bumps are lost in the filtering process and the result is a smooth surface. We introduce a bump map pyramid, that contains and preserves isotropic or anisotropic roughness information in all resolution levels. (orig.)
