SIGBDP 9 structure of future systems (Panel Discussion)
Ernest M. von Simson · 1975
At least three perhaps contradictory trends can be observed in computer installation. One is the move to larger, more powerful centralized systems serving a wide geographic range of users through time sharing, remote job entry, and remote on-line access generally. The other is distributed processing in which the hardware is dispersed to remote sites for local use. A third is distributed processing in the sense of multiple CPU's linked functionally into a single multiprocessing configuration in which one CPU handles I/O, another does file handling, and still others the applications programs.
