Expert Systems in the SDI Environment

Yi-Tzuu Chien, Liebowitz · Computer · 1986

Much work is needed to advance technology in order to meet the complexities and challenges posed by the Strategic Defense Initiative. Expert systems are one alternative that have the potential to contribute to the SDI goals. Some of these application areas are discussed, namely software requirements development, multisensor information integration, battle management, and distributed problem solving. More research is needed on how to cope with evolving requirements, weapon/target discrimination, uncertainty, tremendous time constraints, processing speed and computations, and other areas. The SDI environment presents a challenging problem domain for the coming years. Advances in expert systems and artificial intelligence will help meet these challenges.
