Detection of extremely small capacitive changes using a simple tone burst generator

A simple method for the detection of extremely small changes in capacitive transducers is presented. The basic system consists of a tone bunt generator using only a few off-the-shelf components and a 5 V supply. A resolution of 11F is easily obtained with a modest implementation. A novel feature is the provision of an indication for the direction of movement from the null point in the mechanical domain. Possible use in the measurement of capacitance is also discussed.
