Comparison of VOT in 2-year-old French-, German-, and Swedish-speaking children

George D. Allen · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1982

A previous paper [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. Suppl. 1 69, S82 (1981)] described a corpus of utterances produced by 2- through 5-year-old speakers of French, German, and Swedish. The 2 year olds in this study named pictures, whose names were chosen for their comparable segmental structure between languages (e.g., balloon, Ballon, ballong). The six children of each language group were tape recorded twice, six months apart. Spectrographic and oscillographic analyses of these children's picture-naming responses are presently under way, from which VOT measurements will be obtained. Comparisons of these VOT data, both within and between groups, will be presented. Evidence for articulatory development over the six months' interval between recordings will be discussed.
