A Primer for Problem Solving Using Artificial Intelligence

George P. Schell · Journal of Educational Technology Systems · 1988

Artificial intelligence (AI) has recently enjoyed much interest in academic and popular media. The prospect of creating machines that “think” strikes at the very heart of what most people believe separates human beings from machines. AI focuses attention on the study of what reasoning is, how knowledge is represented, and how it's manipulated. With the proper understanding of these problems, a system can be made that mechanically answers questions and solves problems in a manner which would be described as “intelligent” if performed by a human. Since AI is related to many fields, researchers in other areas desire some understanding of the concepts and principles upon which AI is founded. The majority of these people do not require indepth knowledge of the field. This article presents some of the systems that initiated AI and demonstrates the principles of major AI methodologies with examples that are common in the literature.
