Some communication aspects of character-sensing systems

A large number of bad jokes have been made about the encountered in the reading machine business. If the jokes are not too funny, they serve nonetheless to highlight a significant fact. Character-sensing machines must read real characters if the machines are to be useful outside of the laboratory.
