Visualisation - enhancing qualitative design

Bob Spence · 1996

The thesis we present is that, in engineering design, insufficient use is made of the ability of the human designer to acquire qualitative insight via visualisation and, subsequently, to exploit that insight to achieve good design. In particular, if the designer can observe and interact with the patterns and relationships that characterise the design problem, then improved design may be facilitated. The Influence Explorer is a visualisation tool that can provide both qualitative insight and a fluent transition to quantitative design decisions. (4 pages)
