Subjective performance of amplitude companding in SSB mobile radio systems

In the letter the subjective performance of a VHF single sideband mobile radio system is compared with and without amplitude companding. Laboratory and field tests show that the use of amplitude companding significantly improves the subjective performance, particularly at low signal strengths.
