Adapting an AI-based application from its LISP environment into a real-time embedded system

MIKE YEN · 7th Computers in Aerospace Conference · 1989

As one of the components of 11ie Boeing Advanced Systems smart avionics jroject, a knowledgebased system prototype rdmed the Situation Assessor (SA) was developed. The SA was developed to be a-I intelligent aid to the aircrew in acquiring low level sensor illformation and other communication reports and in form'z!: high-level threat hypotheses about this environ~ilent. The SA prototype was originally developed 63 a Syrnbolic Lisp machine. Given the lim'tations of current avionics hardware, the Lisp-based prototype would be difficult, if not impossible, to embed into the traditional avionics computers. This paper will address the experience gained from adapting the SA prototype from its Lisp environment into a real-time embedded system by converting the SA program from Lisp into Ada. Ada was chosen because it is specifically designed for real-time embedded applications and is also mandated by the Department of Defense for programming mission-critical systems.
