Performance evaluation method using equivalent multislot call traffic models

Because of the rapid change in the utilization of communication traffic, various calls with different speeds are simultaneously present. Therefore, a model for the condition where some of the coexisting calls arrive randomly must be evaluated. On the other hand, there are numerous problems in the conventional evaluation methods, such as when the evaluation is limited only to Poisson call arrival because of the difficulty of analysis, when the evaluation method is too complex to use, and when the evaluation time rapidly increases with an increase of the number of systems. A general-purpose method usable for each system is approximation by the batch call. However, this method is designed for a single call and is hard to use for multiple calls with different speeds. The purpose of this paper is to establish a general-purpose evaluation method. In this method, the random calls are replaced with a multislot call traffic model where the traffic characteristics (average and dispersion in virtual infinite lines) of calls are identical at the arriving point. This proposed method is effective from the viewpoint of precision and ease of use. In addition, the calculation time is short. This method is effective in the traffic evaluation of each system. © 2000 Scripta Technica, Electron Comm Jpn Pt 1, 83(8): 1–12, 2000
