INTRODUCTIONRule-based reasoning and Case-based reasoning have both been applied to a diversified collection of problems with some success. However, each reasoning approach has its own strengths and weaknesses. For instance, case-based reasoning using past experiences as problem solving tools, is limited to solve problems which match with the old cases stored in the knowledge base of the Decision Support System, while rule-based approach, reasoning from a well constructed domain theory, have difficulty reasoning problems where no general rules or regularities can be concluded from past examples. In this research, a new reasoning method is introduced which integrates both case-based and rule-based reasoning approaches.By applying this new approach, problem solvers will be able to capture both explainable and unexplainable expertise from these two reasoning mechanisms and generate more effective plans for decision support.
