Breaking the mold

Joseph Jeffery · 2010

This paper argues for the need to see Computer Science as a necessary and fundamental science as taught within the BC K-12 curriculum. We are reaching a point where the majority of children know how to use a computer but not how it works. Additionally, with no general exposure to Computer Science in high schools only those who have gone out of their way to expose themselves to the field wish to enter it in university. If we employ a strategy of gradual introduction to this curricular area in the same way we do for the general sciences we can school students in the basic ideas of Computer Science that they can then apply in their general lives and in the wider computer-ubiquitous society.
