A new approach to the detection of moving objects

Abstract In this paper, the application of an edge detection algorithm based on homogeneous tests is extended to the detection of moving objects. In this new detection algorithm, dynamic regions occupied by moving objects on a motion sequence are located by a series of homogeneous tests operating on consecutive frames of the motion sequence. Upon locating the dynamic regions on a frame, further processing is carried out to pinpoint the locations of the moving objects. In general, the new moving object displacement/difference-based detector is implemented by a two-sample sign test, two morphological operators, a new object labeling algorithm, two edge detectors, and some simple operators. The versatility of the proposed detector is demonstrated by the fact that it is made up of distribution-free detection components. The simulation results confirm that the detector performs well in Gaussian and nonGaussian (“salt-and-pepper”) noise environments.
