Discrimination of intraphonemic differences along two place of articulation continua
Thomas R. Edman · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1979
Discrimination of intraphonemic differences along two place of articulation continua is examined in a transfer of training experiment. Initial psychometric functions were obtained from six subjects on /bae-dae-gae/ and /pae-tae-kae/ series. Half the subjects then received discrimination training on the voiced series and the other half received discrimination training on the voiceless series. Finally, post-training psychometric functions were obtained from all subjects on both series. All subjects show low levels of intraphonemic discrimination on both series before training, and high final levels of intraphonemic discrimination for the series on which they were trained. Additionally, most subjects show high final levels of discrimination on the nontraining series. Implications of these results are discussed.
