Designing communal rain‐harvesting systems by spreadsheet method
Jure Margeta, Darrell G. Fontane · International Journal of Water Resources Development · 1990
A spreadsheet‐based method for the design of rain‐harvesting systems is presented. Such systems are among the world's oldest and for many isolated areas they are still a major source of water supply. Rain‐harvesting systems require collecting surfaces and reservoir storage. The designer strives to find the optimum combination of these elements to maximize reliability at minimum cost. The spreadsheet model was applied to design a rain‐harvesting system for the island of Silba, Yugoslavia. It was found that the method is simple to use even by persons without extensive experience in programming and modelling. With the spreadsheet program, one can analyse many alternatives in a short period and produce sets of results and graphical displays appropriate for decision‐making.
