The Akhmim Data Base: a Multi-Stage System for Computer-Assisted Analysis of Artifacts

Sheila McNally, Vicky Walsh · Journal of Field Archaeology · 1984

The procedures and problems in designing and implementing a computerized data base for excavated materials from the site of Akhmim, Egypt, are discussed. In order to process large numbers of finds as rapidly as possible, and at the same time obtain meaningful data for cross-cultural comparisons, we have devised a several-stage system. The major effort has consisted of devising a first stage that would be concise, simple, and clear . We describe many of the decisions that are necessary for the successful completion of such a project. In addition, we present a short history of the project and the final structure and contents of the data base for pottery.
