The present article combines historical information along with current data and a sprinkle of mischief, all lightly tossed to call attention to a very serious problem. Because libraries offer their riches so generously to everyone seeking information, without making distinctions of any kind, it is the responsibility of those who use library collections not to abuse this privilege but instead to help in preserving these collections. The publishing industry is rapidly evolving, and online publication might well render the present order of things obsolete. How to protect online text from piracy, theft, and mutilation, will require new and totally different procedures from those now in use to protect printed works from such depredations. Meanwhile, we must continue to seek improvements in the measures being taken to protect the printed word.
