Abstract Integrated train access protocol for a high‐speed ring network is proposed in this paper. Using the concept of the train, synchronous and asynchronous traffic is integrated. To consider the fundamental performance, the periodicity of the channel activity is found in the steady state, and the cycle length is derived. On the basis of this cycle length, the train length, channel utilization, and access interval of each traffic are derived. To characterize the proposed protocol more clearly, it is compared with fiber distributed data interface (FDDI), which uses the timed token scheme. As a result, it is shown that the proposed protocol and FDDI have the same high channel utilization. On the mean access interval of the asynchronous traffic, FDDI shows the increase character with the target token rotation time (TTRT), while the proposed protocol shows the decrease character with the number of asynchronous frames contained in the train γ.
