Comparison of surface and volume presentation of multislice biomedical images

In this paper we consider various issues concerned with the production of 3D presentations from multislice biomedical images. Data storage schemes are briefly discussed with respect to compression and access efficency. We then go on to describe the principles of surface rendering and illustrate with a combined wireframe and surface shaded presentation of an example data set. Volume projection is then considered in some detail, giving a number of different, but simple means of producing projection images, including binary, transparent and brightest point techniques. It is concluded that both surface and volume rendering offer advantages for visualisation and that future work based on combined techniques will be most useful, with an efficient means of extracting surface orientation from volumetric data being an immediate goal.
