An instrument for measuring the horizontal components of a displacement

M Baker, Geoff N. Bullock, I Frazer · Journal of Physics E Scientific Instruments · 1980

Electronic circuits are presented which enable the horizontal components of a three-dimensional motion to be measured accurately by means of transducers formed by two electrodes and a probe immersed in a bath of electrolyte. The system produces an extremely small contact force, is highly linear, exhibits low drift characteristics and may easily be adapted to meet different measurement criteria. The instrument described was designed to measure horizontal displacements of up to 250 mm at frequencies between 0-10 Hz while accommodating vertical displacements of up to 80 mm. Possible modifications to cater for larger displacements are indicated.
