Wall and ceiling structures for efficient sound diffusion over wide frequency bands

Work on efficient sound diffusors [M. R. Schroeder, “Diffuse Sound Reflections by Maximum-Length Sequences,” J. Acoust, Soc. Am. 57, 149–150 (1975)] has progressed to the point where we can now construct surfaces with high sound diffusion over many octaves for both normally and obliquely incident sound. These surface structures hold great promise for enhancing laterally traveling sound, thus increasing subjective preference in halls for music. In this paper we describe the design principles of wide-band diffusors and report experimental results obtained with such diffusors.
