Integrating a state transition diagram with call processing program using a dataflow technique

A switching program and the state transition diagram describing its specifications are normally produced as separate documents. This, however, results in a difficulty for understanding and managing a software system. Programmers require some means to unify both documents in order to solve the problem. We have developed a switching software design method called data driven logic (DDL), which uses a dataflow diagram to describe call processing processes. Taking note of the similarity between these two diagrams, i.e., the state transition diagram and dataflow diagram, we have devised a unification method in which a switching state is regarded as a program component in DDL design. This new method, which creates a unified document of specification and program description, has eliminated the difficulty and has realized high understandability in switching software. © 1997 Scripta Technica, Inc.
