Algorithm for automatic recognition of formations of moving targets

Steven A. Schwartz · Proceedings of SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering/Proceedings of SPIE · 2000

Interim results are presented for a novel approach to finding and recognizing formations in moving-target indicator (MTI) radar data by applying Bayesian methods from image processing. The salient features of an MTI datum are a point location and a range rate along the line of sight to the radar. Each of these values is measured with a random location and range-rate error that has known statistical properties. Formations may have inhomogeneous vehicular density as directed by doctrine. Measured formations have variability in realizations resulting from the maneuvering of individual vehicles within the formation, partial obscuration, and other factors.
