Recent developments in the effects of noise on speech communication

Karl S. Pearsons · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1976

This presentation is basically a progress report of an ongoing project investigating levels of speech normally employed in everyday conversation. The main area of interest has been in homes and schools, but other environmental areas are under consideration, such as hospitals, shopping areas, and inside transportation vehicles. In addition to the speech levels, measures of the background noise are also obtained and used along with the speech levels to determine Articulation Index. We thus have a way of estimating the intelligibility which characterizes the communicating environments found in everyday situations. A description of the instrumentation and analysis procedures will be provided. Some comparisons will also be provided between estimated intelligibility and previously recommended levels.
