Bibliographic Control for the Web

Edward T. O’Neill, Brian Lavoie · The Serials Librarian · 2000

The Web's size, rapid growth, and disorganization render effective usage problematic. The remedy is bibliographic control. Applying bibliographic control to the Web poses two questions: first, what bibliographic units can be identified on the Web, and second, what type of bibliographic control is appropriate for each unit? Analysis of the Web's information structure yields three meaningful bibliographic units: the Web site, the Web page, and the Web collection. Parallels exist between journals and Web sites, and journal articles and Web pages. This suggests that bibliographic control on the Web should emulate the approach used to control the journal literature.
