Involvement of Protein Kinase C in Activation of Drosophila fos and hsp70

Matthias A. Engel, Gerd Cornelius · Cellular Physiology and Biochemistry · 1995

An exogenous signal approaching a cell has to make its way through a system of coupled messengers and amplifiers until it can turn on appropriate genes thereby starting a physiological reaction. The stress (heat shock) response (exemplified by activation of hsp70) is a well-known, universal phenomenon induced by a variety of physical and chemical factors, as is the activation of the proto-oncogene fos that is switched on by growth factors and mitogens. It is shown here that in cultured Drosophila melanogaster cells both genes partially share a common activation pathway involving stimulation of protein kinase C, indicated by typical responses to treatments with specific stimulators and inhibitors.
