This is an article that I wrote 30 years ago, as a 20-something, about the music of Helmut Lachenmann until 1972. I offer my opinions about his music during that period, which was quite advanced and misunderstood. Thirty years later, I think that it is interesting to take this backward glance and see how much--and how little--has really changed.
