The perverse horrors of user–centric design

The usefulness of ‘user centred design’ as a concept in the design of software systems is considered. It is concluded that the concept is frequently used in a way so vacuous as to be devoid of meaning, and would be better discarded. Some suggestions are made for further research in this area; some modest suggestions are also offered to those who wish to develop systems of a type better suited to the needs of civilized society.
