Access control and authorization for CG data with multiple detail levels

In this paper the authors propose a database access control system which handles graphics data. Graphics data are characterized by the need to consider various levels of detail in displays when displaying the same data. Therefore, in the authors' access control system, the access rights for each user are not all-or-nothing. Instead, displays are provided at the maximum level of detail allowed the user when the user requests data, with due consideration for what level of detail is allowed the user. As a result, control with greater flexibility than seen in all-or-nothing access control is possible. However, when displaying different data at the same time, groups of data at various levels of detail cannot necessarily be combined at all times. Therefore, in the authors' system, the level of detail to be displayed is determined with consideration for relationships in which data can and cannot be combined. In addition, when using such access control, the method for providing access rights to each user becomes complex, and there is the possibility of providing access rights that are not consistent. Therefore, the authors also propose a method to verify the consistency of the method used to provide access rights to each user in their framework. © 2000 Scripta Technica, Syst Comp Jpn, 31(9): 72–80, 2000
