Teaching with the Oxford Concordance Program

T. T. L. DAVIDSON · Literary and Linguistic Computing · 1990

A report on eight years use of Oxford Concordance Program with students of Linguistics and English in a mainframe (CMS) environment. The aims have been to enable students to extract data from large text corpora (e. g. LOB and London-Lund) or literary texts relevant to students' courses. These data, not readily obtainable by the student working with paper texts, are intended to help them investigate usage in written and spoken English, vocabulary statistics, and literary-critical claims based on statements about the language of texts. A range of teaching manuals and accompanying files has been prepared. Examples of assessment topics are given. Good and bad aspects of using OCP in a mainframe environment are discussed.
