Pros and Cons of Timing Methods

H.C. Ray · Financial Analysts Journal · 1953

THERE APPEAR TO BE four philosophies regarding timing methods. First, there are those who have no interest in them, and who, like Thurber's cartoon about people, have decided that Timing methods are just no damn good. Second, there are those who tried them all until their money ran out and are now completely disillusioned and have nothing left to use them for anyway. Third, there are those who have survived several so far and who eagerly await the next one which will get them their money back. And, finally, there are those who have earnestly tried to find a sound and sensible approach to timing and who, in most cases, have had some measure of success. The first group will not be interested in this discussion, and to the second it can be of only academic interest. I hope that it will be approved by the fourth group and that some of the third may be moved to join them.
