Discusses the concept of automatic speech recognition presenting the latest system developments achieved in research programmes undertaken by various people. Three research systems are briefly mentioned and the various difficulties such as speech modelling, unclear understanding of the human speech recognition patterns, inadequate software and hardware to perform the required functions are discussed.
