Pitch and Intensity: Additional Data

James F. Nickerson · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1953

The data included in this report are taken from a study in progress attempting to explore the pitch-intensity function of various types of complex tone. These data cover that portion of the study which presents the changes of pitch with changes in intensity of pure tones for 11 ears. Due to the limiting conditions of the study in progress, the methodology departs somewhat from the conventional procedure, yet the data correspond closely and corroborate the recent data on 18 ears reported by Morgan, Garner, and Galambos. Mean pitch shifts rarely exceed 2 percent (approximately 35 cents) and the interquartile range does not exceed 4 percent (approximately 70 cents). There is evidence of low consistency in test-retest results apparently dependent upon intensity level, the frequency, the individual ear, and the individual subject.
