The valuable Internet web of information is not sufficient to help computers leverage hidden meanings and assets just by using the HTML that renders data understandable to people. Institutions of the Linking Open Data movement have applied LOD principles to provide business and public services by connecting a great variety of government and public data including spatial and life science data, information and media content. To promote linking open data in Japan, RIKEN Institute BASE division provides LinkData.org to support "Linked Open Data Challenge Japan 2011 "(http://lod.sfc.keio.ac.jp/challenge2011/)(http://www.facebook.com/LOD.challenge.Japan) The competition will present works by people pioneering mechanisms to apply LOD principles in Japan. The contest is supported by academic and private institutions sharing information on data usage, as well as public and private sponsors. Entry Period: October 11, 2011 --January 31, 2012. Submission categories: Data sets, Applications, and Ideas for services using these elements. Results will be presented at the Semantic Web Conference on March 8, 2012.
