A NOTE ON AN INTEGRAL EQUATION OCCURRING IN THERMOELASTICITY

Vivian Hutson · The Quarterly Journal of Mechanics and Applied Mathematics · 1969

Mahalanabis in (1) reduces a problem in thermoelasticity to a Fredholm integral equation and states that for certain values of the physical constants this equation will in general not have a solution and that even if it does the solution will not be unique. This is not consistent with the expected behaviour of the physical system. It is proved in the present investigation that for all values of the physical constants a solution of the integral equation exists and is unique. This shows that, as expected, the thermoelastic problem always has a unique solution.
